#256 3 Takeaways from the 2022 Midterm Election
Though many races are not final, we have a general idea of the results of the 2022 midterm elections. So, what are the key takeaways from the election as they relate to Christian citizenship? And what should we focus on next? In this episode, I walk through 3 key takeaways from the 2022 midterm election: Competence, courage, and character matter. A profound moral crisis exists in American public life. The vision and direction of our country hangs in the balance. Key takeaways: why Christians should promote a long-term strategy of producing and promoting candidates that reflect competence, courage, and character. The text of California’s constitutional amendment: “The state shall not deny or interfere with an individual’s reproductive freedom in their most intimate decisions, which includes their fundamental right to choose to have an abortion and their fundamental right to choose or refuse contraceptives.” An except from Michigan’s proposal to amend the state constitution: A proposal to amend the state constitution to establish new individual right to reproductive freedom, including right to make all decisions about pregnancy and abortion; allow state to regulate abortion in some cases; and forbid prosecution of individuals exercising established right. A link to Joseph Backholm’s article commenting on the nation drifting into separate moral universes. Frederick Douglass quote 1: “I have one great political idea … That idea is an old one. It is widely and generally assented to; nevertheless, it is very generally trampled upon and disregarded. The best expression of it, I have found in the Bible. It is in substance, “Righteousness exalteth a nation; sin is a reproach to any people” [Proverbs 14:34]. This constitutes my politics – the negative and positive of my politics, and the whole of my politics … I feel it my duty to do all in my power to infuse this idea into the public mind, that it may speedily be recognized and practiced upon by our people.” Douglass quote 2: “No, I make no pretension to patriotism. So long as my voice can be heard on this or the other side of the Atlantic, I will hold up America to the lightning scorn of moral indignation. In doing this, I shall feel myself discharging the duty of a true patriot; for he is a lover of his country who rebukes and does not excuse its sins.” The post #256 3 Takeaways from the 2022 Midterm Election first appeared on The Good Citizen Project.
