The difference between a photo and art is its ability to tell a story, not only about its subject, but its artist and audience. That’s exactly what Mary Peters’ photo, titled “The Last Ride” has done since it was taken in 2019 when Johnny Branger’s ashes were bucked off of Warren Johnson’s stud, Wounded Knee. Each year on Memorial Day, this photo is shared around, and often elicits strong emotions by those who see it, Johnny’s son, Duane, explained.
