He received his MD at the University of British Columbia, and completed his neurosurgery residency at the University of Calgary. He also holds a Masters of Science in Health Services Research and completed a clinical fellowship in complex, minimally invasive spine surgery at the University of Miami. Dr. Yang is a member of the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) society in Calgary and he has been leading the development of the ERAS program through his major contributions such as the development of the first ERAS guideline for lumbar fusion surgery.
