Call for unity regarding deaths in initiation schools
The South African Men’s Forum is calling for a united front in dealing with deaths at initiation schools. They have expressed their sadness at the deaths of 17 initiates this winter in the Eastern Cape. Some of the demands they are making is that the names of all boys who died be published, those who are accountable for the deaths be arrested and that the Justice Department and the relevant authorities remove the secrecy around the deaths. In this conversation, Lerato Mbele speaks to CONTRALESA secretary general, Prince Zolani Mkiva and talk Adv. Aaron Raletjane, spokesperson of the National Initiation Oversight Committee about whether this call can help in stopping initiate deaths, the role of the community in this practice and how this should be done.
