What is our culture's view of a secure identity and how is Jesus seeking to re-form our identity? God has distinct characteristics he wants to develop in the life of each believer and also in his people, The Church. Our purpose is to be an outpost of grace, and community of growth. To be a visual representation of a new way to live, not shackled by guilt and shame, but freed by the love of Jesus.
“Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.”Colossians 3:9-11 (NIV)
“Most Christians are affected by it in a very deep way and don’t know it. They subscribe to the doctrines, they believe the bible and yet they’re operating out of the cultural narrative of identity that late modern cultures give and it’s one of the reasons why we don’t change. It’s one of the reasons we very often embrace the Christian faith but we don’t change because we are actually more conformed to the world’s understanding of identity than the Christian understanding.”
