The author highlights that Melchizedek’s name, meaning “king of righteousness” and “king of peace,” foreshadows Jesus and his titles. The author also emphasizes that Melchizedek’s priesthood is perpetual and superior to the Levitical priesthood, which is significant for the Jewish audience as it demonstrates that Jesus’ priesthood surpasses the old covenant. The importance lies in the fact that the old Law could not bring about perfection or righteousness before God. Only the new covenant with Jesus as the Great High Priest can accomplish that. A priest acts as an intermediary between humans and God, and Jesus, having lived a sinless life, qualifies as the representative who brings our case to God.
