Heritage Day 2023 - Language rights
Guest: Dave Steward - Chairperson of the FW de Klerk Foundation
Guest: Mr Julius Dantile -PanSALB Executive Head of Languages
Heritage Day on 24 September recognises and celebrates the cultural wealth of our nation. South Africans celebrate the day by remembering the cultural heritage of the many cultures that make up the population of South Africa.
As we mark heritage day, we put a focus on language as the indicator of the country's national identity and a part of a person's heritage or a nation.
The FW de Klerk Foundation has released its 2023 report card on Cultural, Religious and Language Rights in South Africa. The foundation is of the view that government has failed to implement the Official Languages Act.
The Use of Official Languages Act, 2012 (Act No. 12 of 2012) strives to give effect to the constitutional obligation of multilingualism.
