Remember the killer Bs? Bagwell and Biggio of the Houston Astros? Bret Biliema takes that to another level. The head football coach at the University of Illinois has two brothers whose first names start with B. Same with his sisters and two daughters. But first names, he claims, matters if you build value to it.
And clearly, Bielema has built plenty of value. Now in his third season at Champaign, Bielema wants to build off an 8 and 4 season. His track record indicates he likely will. “What we have to do is strive to get ourselves better. My first year when we went 5 and 7 I said I didn’t come here to go 5 and 7 and to be quite honest I didn’t come here to go 8 and 5 (they lost the bowl game). But a big step in our program is not necessarily what it takes to win, it’s just the desire to not have failure," Bielema tells the show.
This is a man who took over Barry Alvarez’s program at Wisconsin and became the first coach in school to win at least 8 games in his first season. After 7 years of success in Madison Bielema left for Arkansas and managed three bowl trips in 5 seasons. He then spent two seasons as an assistant with the New England Patriots whose head coach happened to be Bill Belichick. Here we go with the Bs again.
Bielema carefully sidestepped the scandal at Northwestern offering to make sure he always on top of everything that touches his players lives.
This energetic and popular coach says he doesn’t want to leave Illinois and with good reason: he paid some six million annually.
We’ll see.
