MOTOWN, the American record label founded in Detroit by Berry Gordy Jr, is the focus of this week’s program. Motown and its subsidiaries which included Tamla,VIP and Rare Earth was the most successful soul music label during the 1960s. The label achieved over 70 records that listed in the top ten of Billboard’s Hot 100 charts with the Supremes having 12 No.1 hits and Mary Wells being the first Motown female to reach No.1 in 1964. Smokey Robinson was a stalwart of the label undertaking roles of writer, performer and producer.
