S 4 | EP 131 - Representation Matters | Creative Chaos
This is a personal one. The group chats about representation in media and why it is such an important conversation. Many of us who grew up in the distant 80's and 90's can recall that the TV and Film landscape looked very different. Mostly all the protagonists looked the same and most shows reflected a very limited view of life and culture in America. For those growing up Black or Brown, or as child of immigrants, or as part of the LGBTQ community, or any other marginalized group, they rarely saw themselves represented in the media or more often than not, negatively represented. As adults, we can see the impact lack of representation had in our lives and how detrimental it is for young people. Representation can serve as opportunities for minoritized people to find community support and validation. And while things are slowly changing, we still have a lot more work to do.
