The Impact of Incarceration on Birth Stories with The Unborn Prisoner Project
Welcome back to our 2nd week of our mini-series, “The Invisible World of Women’s Correctional Healthcare.” KJ and Kelli joined us again to highlight the significance of womens’ healthcare concerns and the overlooked nature of pregnancy behind bars.Tune in to listen to Kelli and KJ describe their experiences with the legal system and the role the legal system has played into their personal narratives. Through their personal stories, a deeper understanding is provided on the impact of incarceration and how it influences an individuals’ birth story.Kelli’s story is rooted in her experience of being incarcerated. In April 2019, Kelli was sentenced to 20 months and sent to the Maine Correctional Center. Kelli experienced numerous complications with her pregnancy while incarcerated. As for KJ, they also had a life experience that brought them to the occupation of sharing their story with others. The impact of frequent incarceration of a parent during her youth influenced KJ to become committed to discovering alternative methods for community care.Follow The Unborn Prisoner Project:Instagram: The Unborn Prisoner ProjectYoutube: Unborn Prisoner ProjectWant to learn more? What is a Birth Story? The Realities of Pregnancy and Mothering While IncarceratedPrison Baby: A MemoirYouTube Video: Giving Birth While IncarceratedWomen's Health Care in Correctional Setting.Health Care for Incarcerated WomenFollow More Life: The Reentry Podcast on InstagramWant to send us topic ideas or reach out to us?
