The Christians to which he wrote were being influenced by gnostic teachers, teachers who were changing the way they view Jesus. The gnostics were affecting the way the Christians there viewed Christ, the way they behaved, and the way they treated each other. It was a different culture and a different time, but might we not learn from their mistakes and apply them to our current culture?
