Jesus returned to Nazareth of Galilee, His hometown, and attended the synagogue service. He volunteered to read the Scripture and was handed the scroll of Isaiah, probably at His request. He found the place He wanted and read -61, 1, 2- closing at after the phrase, -the year of the Lord's favor.- Returning the scroll to the keeper, Jesus proceeded to comment, saying that the prophecy had just been fulfilled in their hearing. The response from the crowd was to question Him, thinking that because He grew up in Nazareth, they thought they knew all about Him. What is also implied in the proverb Jesus gave is that what the Nazarenes heard about what Jesus did in Capernaum, He should do in His hometown so that they might believe Him. Jesus responded giving two examples of how God blessed Gentiles over Israelites, due to their covenant unfaithfulness. Jesus was implying that their rejection of Him was portending the wrath of God that was come on -the day of the Lord's vengeance- -Isa. 61-2b-. Jesus came to introduce the new covenant Kingdom of God that would include the Gentiles.
