I don’t know about you, but I am both fascinated and scared shitless by the ocean. Granted, I’m not one of those old timey seamen standing on the deck yelling that the sea calls to me and that I love her, but I still believe marine biology is truly a marvel. Deep sea gigantism and whale falls, anyone? Something that keeps me up at night though, is that we’ve only explored around 5% of the oceans so far, and even scarier shit is definitely down there. In this week’s rendition of This or That, we sort through cephalopods, cetaceans, and crustaceans (three ‘c’s of the seas!) because there are myriad weird facts about all three, and it’s always fun to take facts out of context. We end on a marine biology themed spelling shrimp! (The shrimp is an aquatic arthropod and replaces the bee because bees are terrestrial arthropods, it's funny, I swear.)Cher’s word of the day: Bathypelagic, /bæθ.ɪ.pəˈlædʒ.ɪk/Adjective: relating to the part of the ocean that is between approximately 2000 feet (600 metres) and 12,000 feet (3,600 metres) deep.
