09: Perception, Context, and Non-Verbal Human Behavior with Blake Eastman
Human behavior in its many-nuanced forms governs every social interaction that we have. So many of our interactions and communications are nonverbal, and both sides depend on perceptions and context clues to make meaning out of those interactions. This aspect of human psychology is fascinating, and we are jumping into this topic on today’s show. Join us to hear more from today’s guest!Blake Eastman is the founder of The Nonverbal Group, which he started in NYC in 2009 as a behavioral research and education company. Through their large scale studies to record, dissect, and study human behavior, they help entrepreneurs, executives, and poker players understand the human psychology of reading people. Blake’s background includes a stint as an adjunct psychology professor at City University of New York (CUNY) and time spent playing poker professionally. Show Highlights:What The Nonverbal Group does–and how it applies to real lifeHow The Nonverbal Group originated from Blake’s childhood experience with anxiety about social interactions and his later frustration with the academic constraints around psychologyWhy Blake calls video “the main reality” in reading peopleWhy reading people’s behavior has more to do with the invisible social norms than their movements and mannerismsHow most of human interaction comes down to perceptionWhat it means to control the context around you and control the narrativeHow social media is impacting human behaviorHow artificial intelligence is playing into human behavior and interactions–and how things will change in the next few years Why Blake can’t help “noticing” what people do in every social situationHow someone can improve the perception of themselves in the entrepreneurial spaceWhy much of our anxiety and stress come from how we perceive ourselves in social interactionsFoundational tips from Blake about showing up on video and communicating effectivelyBlake’s best tips for Saturday night poker players<br/>Resources:Connect with Blake: WebsiteVisit their website to find out more about The Social Edge, a new 90-day program beginning January 10, 2023.
