Authentic Student Voices and Content: Exploiting Social Media to Reach Learners
With higher education continuing to evolve, institutions are increasingly turning to various social media to connect with students, and the community, in new and meaningful ways. Join us; Zahi Atallah and Chris Forde from Let’s Talk Ed; as we explore the use of different social media, from Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to newer platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, or Snapchat. This week, we shed light on how and why social media is increasingly employed in college outreach efforts. We underline the increasingly critical role of social media in focusing on authentic materials and student-generated content. We also consider how these tools empower students to share their experiences, projects, and perspectives. By doing this, institutions end up creating a dynamic and engaging community that uses online tools to communicate, excite, teach, and link students, families, the broader community, staff, and faculty.
As with every new endeavor, social media use is in many cases an afterthought, rather than a well-planned strategy. Therefore, we emphasize the importance of building the right staffing and technology structures to effectively implement social media outreach. We stress the need to allocate commensurate funding for social media outreach to succeed, as investment in these resources is critical to a seamless and impactful connection with students and the community at large.
Additionally, in this series we explore the potentially game-changing role of short video formats in instruction. Whether it is instructors creating targeted and engaging video content, or it is students capitalizing on the medium for class projects, well done short videos may be effective tool in the modern educational arsenal. Learn how they can enhance the learning experience and captivate students' attention.
Join us to unravel the exciting possibilities of social media in higher education outreach, offering insights, strategies, and inspiration for educators and institutions looking to make a meaningful impact in the digital age. Don't miss out on this discussion that could transform the way you approach student engagement and outreach.
