In this episode we look at how the growth of Irish towns and cities was tied to a clean source of water at the time of the Vikings - and how that same water used for the brewing of beer by the Franciscans in later years. We then chat about the explosion in the Irish population in the early 1800s, the easy availability of alcohol and the associated social disorder. This led, in turn, to the emergence of the Irish temperance movement. We also have some Irish drinking songs to help us along the way. I do hope you enjoy!Music featured in this episode:"The Rare Auld Mountain Dew" performed by Tommy Makem and The Clancy Brothers."Johnny Jump Up" performed by Christy Moore."Whiskey You're the Devil!" performed by Tommy Makem and The Clancy Brothers.<br/>Support the Letter from Ireland Show:Thank you for listening to the Letter from Ireland show.
