Vladimir Putin's attempt to conquer Ukraine is having global implications, with a groundswell of international condemnation of the invasion. Russia has been hit with the most stringent set of sanctions ever applied to a major global economy, and China, its biggest trading partner, has been equivocal in its support. Eliot A. Cohen, a former counselor at the US State Department and professor at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, spoke to NHK World’s Ebara Miki about how the war is unfolding, how it might end, and what it means for the international order. This interview has been edited for clarity and brevity.
