Ep. 89 Jay Busch: Diversity in Cycling
Have you ever looked around and noticed just how white cycling is? According to a recent USA Cycling survey with more than 7,000 respondents, only 3% indicated they are black, 6% hispanic or latino and 4% Asian. Jay Busch, a Cat. 4 living in Des Moines, began showing up on the race-paced group rides just a couple years ago. Like every group ride - it's hard to actually get to know anyone, other than knowing what bike they ride and maybe the kit they usually show up in... "You mean the guy in the red jersey on the blue Trek that has been riding with us for the past couple of years?" "Yeah, does anyone know his name?" That's often how it goes, as it did with me and my introduction to Jay Busch "The guy in the pink jersey on the sweet black and white Canyon?" I got to know Jay by name recently when he lent me his wheel to catch the group after I'd been dropped - and I wondered if it was hard for him to be a black man and jump into this very white sport... so I had to ask - and we agreed to talk about it on tape! Thanks to Jay for being open and honest and hopping on Bike Talk with Dave! A great ride to challenge your bike skills is the Core4 Race in Iowa City, Iowa on August 19, 2023.
