Episode 11 - Step 7 - Emergency Protocol
In this episode, Denise and Jackie open by sharing laughs over social media and how Denise’s post was shared thousands of times. (What does that actually mean?) In our toolkit for living — the 12 Steps Reimagined — this week’s focus is Step 7: “Our actions are based in humility and in the service of our highest and best selves.” In the traditional 12 Step model, the 7th step is to “Humbly ask Him to remove our shortcomings." In the 12 Steps for Everyone framework, this step is the second part of “the long game,” and is about being self-aware and leaning into the good after acknowledging the patterns identified in Step 6. We can become unpredictable in reaction to both our and others’ choices. The takeaway of Step 7 is serving our highest and best self — doing the right thing and taking control. Jackie believes Step 7 is about correcting ourselves and shares a story about repeatedly missing a meeting, and Denise and Jackie find ways to “do something different next time.” Within their conversation, they discuss Denise’s lack of patience around driving and family events (with carpooling or driving separately as the solution). They also share how awareness shows us our unalignment — yet we have to live with ourselves, regardless. While Step 6 is about the willingness to live with our actions, Step 7 is about finding a little more freedom. Lastly, Denise and Jackie wrap up the show by shouting out their listeners around the world, and share their opinions about picking up dog poop.
