Episode 33: Destined to Toil?
Today we examine self-love and self-hate from the culturally significant lens of the Uppity Black Woman in America and the Uppity Black Woman in Ghana. The word that persistently shows up in both worlds is toil. I posit that the toil of the Uppity Black Woman in America - with the covering of white supremacy, is limited in her ability to engage in acts of self-love. The Uppity Black Woman in America is constantly proving, efforting, and obligating, as the world seemingly does not overtly and covertly allow Black Women generally (and the Uppity Black Women specifically) to engage in acts of rest (self-love). In contrast, the Uppity Black Woman in Ghana - she too toils, she too efforts, she too proves, but culturally, she persistently engages in acts of self-love (rest), even though she may not call it such. The distinction to me is that the pall of white supremacy is not layered on all that she does, thus the requirement to constantly toil is in opposition to cultural mores. Hence, the challenge, the requirement for the Uppity Black Woman in America is to be brazen with her choice to actively choose acts of self-love (rest), however I do query whether this is even truly possible in America. If it is not, then Sis, that is fuxed up.

REFERENCES IN TODAYS'S EPISODE

bell hooks, Chapter Nine: Living to Love, Sisters of the Yam: black women and self-recoveryIf you are an Uppity Black Woman, ready to say: I.Can't.Fux.With.You!
