Episode 9 - The Pursuit of Happiness: A Comprehensive Look at Well-being
Are you thriving, or simply surviving? Prepare to have your perceptions of happiness challenged as we explore the world of applied positive psychology, guided by the principles established by psychologist Martin Selegman. His research drives us away from traditional psychology's disease model, which fixates on correcting what's wrong, and steers us towards a quest to discover what makes us flourish. We traverse the landscape of happiness, moving from the simple idea of 'happy feelings' to a more comprehensive theory of well-being. Selegman’s findings eventually gave birth to the PERMA model, an acronym defining the five types of happiness: Positive emotions, Engagement, positive Relationships, Meaning, and Achievement.

We dive deep into each ingredient of the PERMA model, pondering the significance of positive emotions and the state of flow, the vitality of nurturing positive relationships, and the pursuit of meaning and achievement. Through these lenses, we consider the unique struggles of gifted children in fitting into societal norms and how this impacts their well-being. Achievement, irrespective of its magnitude, plays a crucial role in contributing to happiness. Join us on this enlightening journey as we explore how to identify areas in which you or your child might improve, even if you consider yourselves to be generally happy. We provide strategies to bolster these areas, fostering a more holistic sense of well-being. Let's navigate the path to optimal happiness together. If you liked this episode of Raising Happy and Thriving Kids don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast in your favorite podcast software.
