Today, we talk about two lesser-known Japanese films: 1969's Funeral Parade of Roses, a “hybrid-documentary-cum-avant-garde-genderbent-retelling-of-Oedipus-Rex," and 1995's Shinjuku Boys, a slice-of-life documentary following three trans-masc sex workers in Shinjuku. What do trans people today have in common with the "gayboys" and "onnabe" of 20th century Japan? Where is the line between gender identity and gender performance? Does it even really matter?
