Heat dome expanding across the country; Rolen, McGriff enter Baseball Hall of Fame; 'Barbenheimer' tops box office | Top headlines for July 24, 2023
On the version of Hot off the Wire posted July 24 at 6:30 a.m. CT: Phoenix is still sweltering and the heat dome that was across the Southwest is starting to expand across the country. The American-led U.N. Command says it has started a conversation with North Korea about a U.S. soldier who ran into the North last week across one of the world’s most heavily fortified borders. Russian authorities have accused Ukraine of launching a drone attack on Moscow during which one of the aircraft fell near the Defense Ministry’s main headquarters. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been released from the hospital after an emergency heart procedure, as the nation braces for a vote on the first major piece of a contentious overhaul of the country’s justice system. Elon Musk has unveiled a new black and white “X” logo to replace Twitter’s famous blue bird as he follows through with a major rebranding of the the social media platform he bought for $44 billion last year. Scott Rolen and Fred McGriff have been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Rolen was the only player to be voted in by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America this year, and McGriff was selected unanimously by the Contemporary Baseball Era Players Committee. In sports: Brian Harman runs away with the British Open, Cooperstown inducts two new members, the Orioles fly higher atop the AL East, and the Rangers win the battle of Western division leaders. In entertainment: “Barbenheimer” didn’t just work – it spun box office gold. Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” claimed the top spot with a massive $155 million in ticket sales from North American theaters from 4,243 locations. Universal’s “Oppenheimer” also soared past expectations, taking in $80.5 million from 3,610 theaters. And few artists could match Tony Bennett's ability to transcend generations. The legend died Friday. A White House official says President Joe Biden will establish a national monument honoring Emmett Till and his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley. Emmett Till is the Black teenager from Chicago who was tortured and killed in 1955 after being accused of whistling at a white woman in Mississippi. A deadlocked jury has prompted a mistrial in the double murder trial of rapper YNW Melly in South Florida. The panel could not reach a unanimous verdict Saturday after three days of deliberations. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is a senior producer for Lee Enterprises.
