Children’s Mental Health Week takes place from 5-11 February 2024 in the UK and this year's theme is ‘My Voice Matters’. It was set up by children’s mental health charity Place2Be and shines a spotlight on the importance of children and young people’s mental health. My Voice Matters is about empowering children and young people by providing them with the tools they need to express themselves. Today I'm revisiting an episode I released in May 2022, as I thought it would be helpful for parents, grandparents, teachers and anyone wanting to understand how to support children's mental health.I'll discuss what mental health is, why we keep hearing about rising numbers, what are the common factors, and if some children are more likely to have issues with it.I'll then share my top 5 tips on how we can best equip our children to safeguard their mental health. This episode is an overview of mental health, if you’d like specific tips on how to spot mental health issues and how you can help your child, please listen to:Ep 3: Anxiety Part 1 and Ep 10: Anxiety Part 2 If you’d like to understand the link between wellbeing and nutrition, please listen to:Ep 9: The link between children's emotional wellbeing and nutrition with Lucinda Miller  And finally if you’d like to understand the importance of play for children, listen to:Ep 34: Play, a child's work Here are the highlights: (1:20) What do we mean by mental health? (07:30) Common factors affecting mental health (16:40) Encourage problem solving(19:45) Teach your child about self-care (24:15) Promote regular reflective practice (28:00) Maintain connections Watch the Bucket Emptying Episodes on YoutubeJoin the How Not to Screw Up Your Kids Community and ask Dr Maryhan your parenting questions in the weekly Q&A, access a library of digital courses, watch live/recorded 60-minutes with Dr Maryhan at your convenience, and in February your children can attend online workshops too.
