Religious freedom in the country has dramatically deteriorated since the U.S. military withdrawal in 2021. International Christian Concern has noted, “The Taliban are working to completely erase Christianity or any religious minority from the country, even stating that there are no Christians in Afghanistan, an obviously false claim. Many Christians have gone underground to avoid being kidnapped by the Taliban ‘courts.’”  Afghanistan is ranked ninth on the Open Doors World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian.
