‘Keep politics out of sports’ is an often-stated argument used by nation-states that are hosting sporting tournaments to suppress voices of dissent against their association with a sport or event. Today, it is popularly called as ‘sportswashing’ or the practice by nation states or authoritarian regimes that use a sporting event as a platform to improve their reputation that have been tarnished by wrongdoings such as their questionable human rights record. Qatar, host of the upcoming FIFA World Cup, is being asked difficult questions about migrant workers who died during the construction of its football stadiums & the unequal status meted out to minority groups in the conservative country. Will the heightened attention bring about some change in their domestic policies with respect to women & LGBTQ or is this purely business-driven?
