The Tim Heale Podcast S3 E172 David Messano

I grew up in a family of 18 (11 boys & 7 girls) same mom and dad. We grew up poor and in a cult religion. We moved a lot due to finances but we had each other! We lived in the northern Bay Area of Cali!

As I grew I wasn’t really taught the ropes of life so I had to in-steel them in myself! I was bullied a lot, both in school and the church we went to!

I wasn’t the best student but I was extremely smart and dedicated when I wanted to be. My grades went from Ds to As literally every year, but I knew I had something great in me! When I started high school I failed ninth grade due to my parents going through separation which is no excuse! I hated the feeling of not being good enough and being an outcast so I decided to change. My tenth grade I wasn’t much better but I started to change and by the end of the school year I was an A/B student. I got into weed that year too! The weed helped me get away from reality and do what I wanted. But that held me back. I went to summer school that year to catch back up and at the end of the summer my sister in Vegas gave me the opportunity to move to Vegas to start anew. So I did just that and I decided to give up weed and take up another hobby in its place. I started working out. My inspiration came from Nick Best (strongman competitor). I became a straight A student and changed my life around. I worked for Starbucks worked out and got back on track to graduate. My senior year I took to much on myself and started wrestling, working out, working, and took 3 AP courses as well as a full schedule in school! I went into a deep depression which I let shape my world instead of being strong. I still finished the school year out as an A/B student!

Then, I didn’t know what I wanted to do after school which was the scariest thing ever! I was going to join the Marine Corp right out of school but one of my sisters talked me into going to Moorpark community college to figure out what I wanted to go to school for! So I did that and I loved it at first

I got tired of working, going to school and not knowing what I truly wanted to do, and going to the gym! I knew I had the dedication and discipline to do much more fulfilling stuff! Fitness just turned me on and let me face my darkest hours in life and I wanted to make something of it!

I decided to finally join the Marine Corp! I loved it even though bootcamp sucked! It showed me my true potential and what it’s like to be structured, disciplined, and give yourself to others! I had big dreams for the military but unfortunately I was a reserve! I wish I had chose different but it was what it was! I was kicked out with an other than honorable discharge due to medical reasons!

When I got out of the military my life flipped! The people I lived with kicked me out due to covid, my mentor said I didn’t have the spirHistory Nerds United
