We are the recipients of God's grace through faith because of the oath that He swore to Abraham, and His plan for redeeming a people for Himself, our salvation through Yeshua Ha Meshiach, Jesus Christ. Grace comes before obedience, relationship preceeds obedience. Because we have God's grace, we desire to obey. Then come the bessings of obedience, "if you will follow these rules" then God will bless you. Israel was given the law in order to live in relationship with a holy God. There is the discipline and the training of both hard times and good times. Deuteronomy 8:2-3: "Remember the long way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, in order to humble you, testing you to know what is in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commandments. He humbled you by letting you hunger, then by feeding you with manna, with which neither you nor your ancestors were acquainted, in order to make you understand that one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD." Deut 8:12-14, 17-18 "When you have eaten your fill... and all that you have is multiplied, then do not exalt yourself, forgetting the LORD your God," 17: "Do not say to yourself, ' My power and the might of my own hand have gotten me this wealth.' But remember the LORD your God...". Deut 9:5 "It is not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you are going in to occupy their land;but because of the wickedness of these nations the LORD your God is dispossessing them before you, in order to fulfill the promise that the LORD made on oath to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob." Deut 10:14-17 "Although heaven and the heaven of heavens belong to the LORD your God, the earth with all that is in it, yet the LORD set his heart in love on your ancestors alone and chose you, their descendants after them, out of all peoples, as it is today. Circumcise, then, the foreskin of your heart, and do not be stubborn any longer. For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome..."
