Dane County’s 2023 Budget set aside funding to establish a new Department of Justice Reform - in hopes of addressing racial disparities and disproportionate incarcerations. It’s just getting off the ground now - in part held back because officials haven’t agreed on who should be the interim head. County Executive Joe Parisi recommended former Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney for the position. But his recommendation would require approval from the County Board - approval he did not obtain. WORT News Producer Faye Parks spoke with Supervisor Rick Rose of Madison’s east side, who gave more details on the County’s approval process. He and several of his colleagues say that an ideal candidate should not come with a background in law enforcement - as that’s the system they’re looking to reform.
