#255 Gen Z and Citizenship
I often hear concerns about Generation Z and, more specifically, a lack of interest in Christianity and civic responsibility. But those trends are, of course, not applicable across the board. There are a number of young leaders dedicated to following Jesus and living out Biblical principles in public life despite the cultural pressures they face. Cody Sonnenburg is one of those leaders; and I enjoyed a recent conversation with him about spiritual formation, his view of ministry in the public square, and how we can partner with members of Gen Z to make a difference in quickly changing times. Key Takeaways: The importance of early discipleship in the home and at church. The influence of a Sunday school/small group leader in his life, and his early experience of holding different beliefs than many of his classmates. Great quote by C.S. Lewis, “Only a real risk tests the reality of a belief.” How he navigated the pressures of middle school and high school as a follower of Jesus. His experience at a Christian college, including debates over issues such as CRT, what it means to be an evangelical Christian, etc. Advice to church leaders as they engage and disciple members of Gen Z and Gen Alpha. How he became interested in public life, and his experience leading a student organization dedicated to Christian citizenship. Why a proper understanding of American history is critical for our future. His remarkable example of resiliency and trusting God during a difficult season of his life.
