#284 The Acts, Chapter 2
In this episode, we continue our chapter-by-chapter study of the book of Acts. Big Idea: The early church carried the gospel throughout the known world in approximately 30 years and transformed an empire in 3 centuries. Now the church seems intimidated, uncertain amidst swift cultural changes. So, what did the early Christians, commanded by Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit, do that we are not doing? Here are their acts, and may they inspire our own. Outline for Chapter 2: The Church’s Birthday Christ’s Kingdom The FIsherman’s Sermon The Harvest Key Takeaways: What is Pentecost? The connection between this event, the Jewish feasts, and how God’s plan for redemption continues from the Old Testament into the New. The remarkable fact that the Holy Spirit fell on the disciples in a house, not the Jewish temple built for God’s glory and presence. The purpose of tongues in Acts 2. How Acts 2 sets out a very different, universal kingdom in direct contrast to and in subversion of Roman rule. The fisherman’s sermon, and the Peter that Jesus saw when He first called Peter to follow Him. How Peter connected David to Jesus and informed the Jews that the throne of David was empty no longer. A checklist of sorts for the activities of the church, and the importance of prayer. The result of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in new conversions and a genuine love and care among Christians.
