En el siglo XVIII, la emperatriz Catalina II había dado la orden que se representaran óperas al Teatro Bolshoi de San Petesburgo, en ese momento la capital del Imperio Ruso, pero las obras que llegaron a Rusia fueron solo óperas de compositores italianos como Gallupi, Paisiello, Cimarosa y el español Martín y Soler, quien fue nombrado director de la Ópera y allí vivió y trabajó hasta su muerte.
