Bipolar General | Maj. Gen. (ret) Gregg Martin - S.O.S. podcast #99

Many suffer in silence when their brain fails them due to embarrassment, shame, and stigma.

I know this all too well, having experienced delusions and paranoia for over 30 days at my first duty station while fixing airplanes assigned in a remote overseas location.

I still find it painful to talk about the specifics of this period and make sense of it. That’s why I’m so grateful Gregg Martin is giving us an inside look at bipolar disorder and how it wreaks havoc on all parts of one’s life.

The traits that made Martin an outstanding military leader—incredibly positive attitude, tireless, and hyper-focused—went too far. Though he did not realize his penchant for intensity in thought, word, and action shifted into an abnormal range amid the chaos and fog of war, those around him did identify and witness these behaviors. There is a fine line between genius and madness, and Martin became intoxicated by war in ways he could no longer fully control.

He spent more than three decades in the Army, climbing to the top of the ranks, only to see it all dissolve due to a crippling mental illness.

His book Bipolar General is an incredibly detailed look at when the illness started, the signs of the disorder, how the military and the VA misdiagnosed the symptoms, and how, eventually, two years post-military, he finally got the care he needed.

Find Gregg here - https://www.generalgreggmartin.com/Visit my website: https://thehello.llc/THERESACARPENTER
Read my writings on my blog: https://www.theresatapestries.com/
Listen to other episodes on my podcast: https://storiesofservice.buzzsprout.com
