If you do not know how to set goals or how to see them through, you will not be successful. But before we talk about how to set goals, we must first talk about what makes up a goal, what it is, and what it is not. What Is a GoalSo, what is a goal? A goal is the object of a person's ambition or effort, an aim or desired result. If you have ambition, which I believe most of you do and want to get the desired result in your life, then you can set a goal. The difficulty comes with the effort portion of the definition. You much put effort behind your goal for it to have a chance of coming through. There are a few other things you much possess to set a goal. You must be able to visualize what you want. If you are a person that must see everything before making a decision, setting a goal may not come naturally to you. Have you ever met someone who has to see every option possible before making a decision? Or maybe you know of someone who, when asked what color they would like on a wall or where they would like a piece of furniture placed in a living room, must see several colors on the wall or have the furniture physically placed in several places before being able to make a decision. People who think this way may be able to set a goal in theory but will have a hard time visualizing what the plan is supposed to look like when it is accomplished.Another ability you must possess is being able to prioritize. Not only must you be able to see what things look like when you reach your goal, but you also must be able to visually see every step that is needed to be accomplished along the way.Lastly, you must realize that to accomplish a goal; you will have to say no a lot. Some people have a hard time saying no. They say yes, even when they know, they will not be able to fulfill what they agreed to, just to stress out about their decision and continually ponder how they can get out of their commitments. Accomplishing goals can be challenging and may take much time. It is common for people to underestimate how long it takes to get things done. You see this with people with little to no experience setting goals and seeing them through. If you have never set a goal and seen it through, it is tough to understand the challenges that come your way. We naturally think that just because others have done it, we can do it with the same vigor, speed, and ease.I liken setting and accomplishing goals to riding a bike. If you have never ridden a bike, it is easy to see others do it and think, “I can do that.” But once you get on a bike for the first time, you find it is not so easy. You may first need to start with the training wheel, then have someone hold your bike from behind while you peddle and become familiar with how to get your balance, and then after some time, you start to know how to ride your bike on your own. This does not mean you can not jump ramps and do tricks, but you are now familiar with how to ri
