They claim to have known both students personally. According to this source, Chris was planning on obtaining a gun and shooting up the prom itself. He couldn't get one so he took a steak knife from home and brought it to school. He had been trying to contact a friend of his late the night before, but his friend had been sleeping, so he didn't get the call. Chris met with Maren and shoved her down the stairs and then started strangling her. Maren fought back, but Chris became agitated, took out the knife, and killed her. A teacher who had heard the screaming rushed to help, but due to a recent hip replacement, couldn't overpower Chris.
