Jesus is teaching the fear of God. v. 27 – Jesus is speaking of the dark. When he was with the apostles, a lot of what he was sharing, they did not understand. Think of the dark as misunderstanding or a certain time of day when secrets are shared. Think of the light as perfect understanding, meaning later on it will be understood. Housetops – during Bible times and in the middle East, the housetop was an important place that folks would lounge and bathe, it was cooler. Gossip/communication was shared from the housetops. v. 28 – Fearing the Lord means to respect and revere, that we need to give the utmost reverence and respect to the Almighty. Who are we fearing? Who are we giving our utmost respect and reverence to?Why do we need to ask ourselves who we are respecting and revering? In times of suffering, confusion and waiting, you and I can grow and not just grunt our way through it. You and I can win and not just wither. We can trust the truth of God’s word. v. 30 – God numbered your hairs. v. 31 – Do not fear, you are more important and have a greater value than these sparrows.
