SHOW HIGHLIGHTSThe value of the challenging times is that they teach you things that the good times do not or cannot teach you. Become comfortable with the uncomfortable things you are asked to do. Being uncomfortable does not necessarily mean you are not prepared; it might simply mean you are being exposed to a new experience to which you can apply your existing skills. In the midst of urgency, there is always time, even a little bit of time, to think through things. If you see yourself as a leader who can advance the mission of the organization, while bringing the men and women who work in it along with you, most of the decisions you might make are not going to necessarily be good for you. These types of decisions will put more on your “plate”, so you have to learn how to “manage your plate”.Take time to develop relationships with your people, even the people you don’t necessarily like, and let them know you, appropriately, as well as you can. These relational interactions help leaders start to develop trust and provide insights into how most effectively communicate with them.It is your character that carries you through difficult decision-making, crisis decision-making, and complicated moments in personal or organizational life; “…it’s your character and reputation, not your knowledge and your skill.”Reflect on your experiences; ‘there is a big difference between being involved in events in life… and having the wisdom and knowledge that comes from reflected experience.’Greg began his professional life in the United States Marine Corps.
