In our New Covenant passage, John 1:19-34, John the Baptist heralds, sees, and announces Yeshua (Jesus) which means salvation in Hebrew, as 29:"the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world". 33:"'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'" We see in the Torah, Old testament, portion Deut 16:18-21:9, the foreshadowing of Yeshua as the fulfillment of Deut 16:20: "Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue, so that you may live and occupy the land that the Lord your God is giving you." To understand the idea of justice in Israel we must bear in mind the Biblical teaching that man is created in the image of God; that in every human being there is a Divine spark; and that each human life is sacred, and of infinite worth. God judges His human children by justice tempered with mercy. "To do justly and to love mercy," is the Prophet's summing up of human duty towards our fellow men. Yeshua is the perfect impartial and righteous judge. Yeshua is the perfect servant king 17:15 "whom the LORD thy God shall choose" and 17:20 "that his heart be not lifted up above his brethren, and that he turn not aside from the commandment...". Yeshua is our perfect high priest 18:5 "For the LORD thy God hath chosen him out of all the tribes, to stand to minister in the name of the LORD". Yeshua is the prophet spoken of by Moses, 18:18 whom the LORD "will raise up ... and will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak unto them all that I command him." And in the end of the portion, Deut 21, describing the means of atoning for the blood guilt of a murder committed by an unknown person, there is the strong foreshadowing of Yeshua's propitiation. Propitiation refers to the turning away of the wrath of God as the just judgement of our sin by God's own provision of the sacrifice of Yeshua Ha Meshiach, Jesus Christ, on the cross. Finally the Haftorah, Isaiah 52:7 heralds the good news that announces "salvation", which in Hebrew is Yeshua!, that says unto Zion: 'Thy God reigns!'. Isaiah 52:10 "The LORD has bared his holy arm before the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God, Yeshuat Eloheinu."
