DSNSB welcomes Justin Jensen @justin.n.jensen to the show! Justin is a Special Forces Communications Sergeant with the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) out of Florida. After that he was a Special Forces Communications Advisor with the 19th Special Forces Group out of Texas. He’s now a Fellow with the Warrior-Scholar Project and student at Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin. Justin and I sit back and chirp about... Justin going from couch to marathon in 6 weeks. Being raised by a recovering heroin addict in the rooms of Narcotics Anonymous How to know if your parent loves you or not if they don’t say it out loud Basic training Skydiving! What was going on in Afghanistan circa 2013 Special Forces MindsetThe methodology of refusing to take offense How much of his training was reaction versus instinct when in live combat I asked Justin if he could sit down with his enemy to try and understand him, would he? The warrior scholar project (www.warrior-scholar.org) and the power of their programs turning a first-generation heroin addicts' son to now studying to become a doctor. Shout out to the Y.O. Ranch! Home - Y.O. Ranch Headquarters (yoranchheadquarters.com) Some of my favorite quotes from this episode:

45:14 - David: “You mentioned that your dad didn't say that he loves you very much, maybe under, you know, you could count it on one hand. Yeah. But you know, he loves you. How do you know?”

Justin: “How do I know? Um, I mean, He's the dude that showed up for every sporting event, coaching teams. Like, I would say it was just tough love. Yeah. Right. It wasn't like, was never like abused. I definitely got my ass whooped, deservedly. But if he didn't love me, just like retrospectively, he'd still be using heroin. He'd probably be dead from using heroin”.

1:46:38 - “Accepting that somebody might be telling you something you need to hear in a tone or manner that is like not conducive to whatever emotional state you're in at the moment. If you can find a way to override that, to not be offended or take it and actually try to hear what they're saying, might be like one of the greatest lessons you can learn”.

2:10:08 - “Here, like in America, when I hear oppression, I'm like, I've seen a different flavor and it doesn't quite look like what I'm seeing here.

But the flavor I saw was like literally we pulled security on this all day for this like election thing that happened. This chick shows up votes weeks later we find out she was like stoned to death... So the story I'm telling myself is , that's a guy who I would be talking to, but there's another reality of like, hey, maybe we accidentally killed a dude's brother and now that guy hates Americans, which I can empathize with”.

Justin’s story of being a first generation heroin addicts son to a Green Beret Special Forces Soldier to now studying medicine in ATX has me inspired, laughing, and thinking about how I treat people in my life and how I respond to certain situations.

I know Justin’s message will resonate with anyone that hears it, but that will only happen if you help us reach them, so stop what you're doing now and go leave us a five-star review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and subscribe on YouTube.
With big love & gratitude, David & the DSNSB Guests Support the showhttps://www.youtube.com/@David....sSaturdayNightSitBac
