Rebalance Your Microbiome with Kiran Krishnan
Kiran Krishnan is a Research Microbiologist and has been involved in the dietary supplement and nutrition market for the past seventeen years. He comes from a strict research background having spent several years with hands-on R&D in the fields of molecular medicine and microbiology at the University of Iowa. Kiran is the founder and former Chief Scientific Officer at Physician’s Exclusive, LLC. and Microbiome Labs. Kiran begins by telling us what he's been doing lately. Over the years, he's pioneered education about the microbiome and leaky gut. Now he’s focused on research and products related to hormones and even the skin microbiome. Kiran dives into the impact of breathing on the microbiome. While 36% of the microbial density in the body is located in the intestines, 23% is found in the mouth. Very often, mouth breathers can develop microbial imbalances in the mouth. This can lead to a higher number of dysfunctional microbes in the airways and lungs which has the potential to cause asthma, allergies and other health issues. Kiran explains that the body is designed to constantly detoxify itself of hormones, toxins and other unwanted substances. The microbiome can either improve and assist that detoxification or if you have the wrong microbial population, it can negate that process and even re-toxify the body. In this way, Kiran says that the microbiome is either driving healing or disease. Later, Kiran discusses staple foods for feeding a diverse and healthy microbial population. He says the average person eats maybe 15 foods per year while our ancestors ate upwards of 600 types of foods. He says that our microbiome evolved based on that diversity of foods. Kiran offers a great suggestion about setting a goal to add one new food into the diet each week and visiting smaller ethnic grocery stores to find new foods. Finally, Kiran shares some tips on staying healthy during busy times of life and travel: Step 1: Maintain certain health promoting habits such as intermittent fasting and having a supplement regimen. Step 2: Build resilience with practices such as stress management, breathwork, exercise, strength training among others. Step 3: Promote Recovery with infrared sauna, red light therapy, healthy meals and getting plenty of quality sleep.
