S2, EP 6. Sarah Powell (BRACA1, Pink Hope and Hereditary Cancer Mutations)
Join us as we dive into the inspiring journey of Sarah Powell, a resilient woman who has turned her personal battle with cancer into a beacon of hope for countless others. Sarah is the CEO of Pink Hope, a hereditary cancer charity, where she channels her experience, strength, and passion to make a meaningful impact.Hailing from the vibrant city of Melbourne, Sarah is a mother of two amazing children, Jackson and Mikayla, aged 10 and 15 respectively. Sarah's journey through cancer began in 2006 when she was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer, one of the most aggressive and challenging forms. This journey was further complicated by her discovery of a BRCA1 mutation, a genetic variant that significantly increases the risk of breast and ovarian cancers. The experience led her to undergo a prophylactic mastectomy and the removal of her ovaries and fallopian tubes to mitigate her risk.During our podcast, Sarah fearlessly shares how her journey transformed her life. She discusses the physical and emotional toll of undergoing surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation, while simultaneously juggling her responsibilities as a mother and a career woman. The ongoing fear of recurrence and the concern of not being there for her children have shaped her perspective on life. Sarah's unique journey stands out in multiple ways. She remarkably fell pregnant shortly after completing her treatment, defying the odds and demonstrating the resilience of the human body. Her experience highlights the importance of genetic awareness, as her lack of a family history led to the discovery of her Ashkenazi Jewish heritage's impact on hereditary mutations. Throughout her journey, Sarah found solace in the support of her friends, family, and the Pink Hope community. Tune in to hear her share her experiences, her triumphs, and the invaluable insights she's gained through her journey. For more info: Support To Reduce The Risk Of Hereditary Cancer | Pink Hope
