SELF in the Last Days

Everything has become about self, self, self...but nobody's self has become better.  At least 6 times in the gospels Jesus tells us to lose ourselves, deny ourselves, take up our cross, etc. Why does Jesus do this? We must know the difference between "love your neighbor as yourself," and "in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self..?"
