Tamás Kelemen on Training the Elite Athletes of Cirque du Soleil
Tamás Kelemen is the head strength and conditioning coach for the Cirque du Soleil show “O.” Cirque is the largest contemporary circus producer in the world, with 17 active shows, 6 of which reside in Las Vegas. Tamas started off as an athlete, where he was an elite-level gymnast and diver. At the end of his career, he became an artist and diver “O” for 6 years. When it was time to hang it up as an athlete, he became the strength coach for “O,” and the rest, as they say, is history. In this episode, we talk about all the unique challenges that Tamás has a strength coach for a circus. For starters, what is it like to program and coach for 150 athletes, from 20 different sporting disciplines, and hail from over 30 different countries? Or how do you build trust and rapport with elite level athletes who have NEVER had a strength coach before? We cover all that – and much more – in this episode! You can’t even compare (Cirque) to other sports that are in-season, because those athletes may play 1-2 times per week. These artists do 10 shows per week, 5 nights in a row, and they need to be ready every night for those forces and those impacts. – Tamás Kelemen This Week on the Physical Prep Podcast: How Tamás got started in strength and conditioning, and eventually transitioned to working for Cirque du Soleil. The wide variety of athletes he sees on a daily basis. How to manage client and athlete flow when you have 150 athletes coming through your gym in a short period of time! Why elite athletes aren’t always “elite” in the gym. The pros and cons of working with high-level athletes. How Tamás goes about trying to understand the needs of all the various sporting disciplines he works with – from contortionists and aerialists, to divers and fire artists. Why workload management is such a critical piece of the puzzle – especially when these athletes are performing 480+ nights per year!
