TORONTO: Reflection and Innovation: Asian Canadian Immigrant Theatre - Dr. Eleanor Ty

About the presenter:Over the last decade, Asian Canadian theatre has developed and expanded in terms of themes, subject matter, and ways of representation. Since the publication of Nina Lee Aquino’s two volume compendium Love +Relasianships in 2009, there has been several plays that go beyond the realist depiction of an immigrant family’s struggle to survive in one’s adopted land, beyond the conflicts between older and younger generations, issues common to immigrant drama. While issues of assimilation and adjustment are still present, many playwrights present their stories in innovative ways, include elements of music, dance, performance and even some magic to produce entertaining yet challenging plays, to raise important social issues about race, gender, and social justice.
