Train To Live, Live To Fight w/ Coach Sal
Today's podcast is with my MMA instructor, Coach Sal. Sal owns and operates Clinch MMA in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. We discuss a wide range of topics centred around how the skills and attributes one learns from training combat sports can be utilized to live a rewarding and fulfilling life. He sets the standard everyday and relentlessly pursues excellence for himself and his students. Coach Sal, a Vancouverite, started training in Karate at the age of 7. By the time he was sixteen years of age, Sal had earned a second-degree black belt in Tae Know Do under the then master, Sun S Choi, and was competing in local tournaments. Sal moved forward in martial arts, adding MMA to his journey and earning a Sports Science diploma from Douglas College.Sal didn't stop there and added Muay Thai to his training, where he had various coaches on the lower mainland before taking his first trip to Thailand to continue his studies in Muay Thai. Once there, he instantly fell in love with the culture and the sport, returning several times to train at the famous Sangmorakot gym under legendary promoter Jar Tui where he won a stadium title. In the early 2000s, Sal started competing in Amateur Kickboxing, MMA, and Pankration.
He earned his way to the level of professional title. He continued to compete in MMA, kickboxing, and Muay Thai before retiring from competition in 2010.Sal opened Clinch MMA Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, in 2008. His studio offers Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and Muay Thai Kickboxing. Clinch MMA incorporates conditioning, submission, fighting, combat training, grappling techniques, judo throws, boxing, and self-defence into all of its classes.Sal has taken his athletes from local championships to World Title Main Event Championships internationally at the highest level in the sport.
